Accomplishments of the Immigrant Rights Movement:
Even though immigrant rights are constantly being violated, there are times when organizations step into the field and have accomplishments in representing their clients. Below are some of them:
- •In a case in 2009, the Food Chain Alliance was able to recover $1.5 million in unpaid wages to 550 workers from New York’s Amish Market
- In this case, a grocery chain was underpaying their staff and wages were able to recovered when they sued.
- Supreme Court gives second chance to man facing deportation because of bad lawyering:
- A man was facing deportation after his lawyer told him to take a guilty plea for a drug charge. The petitioner, had his right to effective legal counsel violated, and therefore was granted a stay in the U.S.
- Undocumented immigrants can now receive drivers licenses.
- According to the REAL ID Act, people need to prove their legal status' when applying for identification cards and driver's licenses. The Green Light Law allows for standard licenses to be distributed to those who wish to have one. The DMV will not ask for social security numbers and legal status when applying.
- Family separation and asylum claims.
- Even though family separations and asylum cases are still on going in the U.S., there was a point in time where President Trump was slammed with lawsuits. The government then allowed for rejected asylum cases to be re-applied for. This did not stop families from being separated but gave people the chance to present a case. This is a slow moving accomplishment in the making.
